Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

He was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
