In a notable move for their retooling roster, the American League club have officially added Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract bringing in the high-profile player.

Financial Terms and Incentives

The contract features a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside annual pay of $16 million for the next season and $17 million for the following year.

Notably, Murakami's compensation may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

• $1 million for being named the Most Valuable Player award.
• Half a million dollars for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
• A quarter-million for placing in the top ten.
• $250,000 for winning the ROY honor.

The agreement also stipulates that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his approval and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the term. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.

Posting Fee and Team Legacy

As part of the transaction, Chicago owes a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club get a supplemental fee of any triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese to represent the Chicago franchise, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.
