New York state attorney general has rolled out a new reporting form urging locals to share images and footage of ICE operations throughout New York. This step follows a day after a significant enforcement action disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, prompting large-scale demonstrations.

American Citizens Arrested In Raid

A congressional representative revealed during a news conference that four citizens were arrested and kept for "almost a full day" following Tuesday's raid. Protests occurred in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

"All New York residents is entitled to exist without intimidation," the AG wrote in a statement.

"For those who saw and documented federal operations recently, I encourage you to provide that evidence with my office. We are pledged to assessing these reports and evaluating any legal breaches."

The portal provides spaces to upload images and video footage of the raid, as well as a section to note where it occurred. Prior to sending, submitters must tick a box that states that "the office could utilize any materials, images, or footage in a public document, such as in a lawsuit or official statement."

Details of the Chinatown Raid

The Chinatown raid, which onlookers say included dozens of federal agents, occurred in a popular district of the city where counterfeit purses, items, goods and merchandise are sold daily widely – typically to visitors.

Videos of the incident show multiple covered and weaponized personnel restraining and arresting a man, and shoving away onlookers. Masses of New Yorkers trailed the personnel through the streets. An armored military vehicle was observed rolling through the Manhattan avenues.

Political Response

At a midweek briefing held with the New York immigrant rights coalition, the congressman, a Democratic representative, announced that four American citizens were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where nationals should be taken for no reason." He noted the citizens were released on the following day with no charges filed.

"The intent is obvious here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman stated. "This represents a militarized effort to create conflict. It is purely a pretext to provoke conflict for this administration to utilize the military to stop unrest that they themselves caused."

Widespread Condemnation

Outrage over the federal action rapidly grew – all three political contenders criticized the raid, including Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Once again, the current administration selects heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, rather than security. It needs to cease," a contender wrote.

The city's community groups voiced concern as well.

"Federal officers descended on the neighborhood with tactical trucks, masked agents and protective equipment to focus on small merchants attempting to earn income. This action had no connection to citizen protection and was entirely about intimidating residents and neighborhoods," stated the head of a major immigrant coalition.

Official guidelines forbids the arrest of American nationals and the agency has stated it refrains from apprehend citizens. Nevertheless, investigative journalism has revealed that numerous American nationals have been held against their will by immigration authorities during the period of the current administration.

Ongoing Trend

ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in the state and around the country lately.

A mid-October raid in the city center was the initial documented operation on an housing center of the current administration. Rallies opposing ICE are commonplace along with accusations of violence and inhumane treatment.
