Moments before he was crowned, a nervous thought raced through Rory McIlroy's mind. He said he was thinking, "Please don't let it be a Formula 1 star once more."

"This has been a great night for golf," the champion said. "Our game was celebrated in such a significant way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a special evening for golf, and perhaps we can capitalize on that."

On this occasion, however, there was no late twist. The result was uncontested, allowing a delighted McIlroy to enjoy a standout evening for both himself and the team winners, who were honored as the top squad.

Non-Stop Adventures

Instead of opting to attend the aftershow party, McIlroy was already thinking about his upcoming event. After played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was heading straight back to Florida.

"It's been a whirlwind 24 hours," he said. "I am anticipating a little bit of rest over Christmas."

Unfinished Business

However, McIlroy made clear he has no desire to become complacent, despite completing the set of all four majors earlier in the year. "I still feel I've got a several strong seasons in me," he asserted.

"Additional major championships, tour championships, Ryder Cups, that's great. But provided that you feel like you can keep getting better and have the desire, that's the essential part."

Collective Honor

Elsewhere, fellow European Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the collective trophy, also praised golf's exceptional night and his pal's award.

"They are the moments that will live with us forever so to get the public's recognition for that is truly special," he stated. "Seeing Rory receive that award, I think he is so worthy so much."

After it was noted that McIlroy was only the third golfer to win the award in its long history, Fleetwood smiled before adding, "Not a very popular bunch are we!"

Looking Ahead

He is aiming to finally win his maiden major next year but he recognized McIlroy still craves more success. "If you want to be the ultimate competitor, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to improve," the 34-year-old said.

Football Loyalty

Before McIlroy left, a last query came up. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been asked to parade his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be tempted to do it again after his new triumphs?

"Provided that they quit letting in four goals at home," he replied with a grin. "Improvements are being made. There's a hint of optimism around."

Following a 2025 for the ages, it's understandable that he is focusing on the upside.
