The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Flavor
One of the co-founders behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction of a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the business with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he plans to independently develop this new product within an individual series showcasing causes the company was barred from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Founders versus Corporate Owner
The recent announcement deepens the ongoing disagreement between the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders have asserted that the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem of Solidarity
The entrepreneur stated through social media that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for naming options plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder stated from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become a symbol of support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, that mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Previous Activism plus Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which originally created in 2016 for endorsing former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts and Upcoming Plans
The founder indicated that he will develop other frozen dessert varieties that address concerns which the company was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, following many years of involvement, citing worries regarding how the company's autonomy had been undermined after Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can achieve the social mission, the values which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
