Tottenham Manager Frank Calls Vicario Critics 'Not True Real Fans'
The Cottagers Start Strong to Beat Tottenham and Raise Tension on the Manager
Tottenham Hotspur supporters who jeered keeper Vicario were informed later "they cannot be real Spurs supporters" by boss Frank.
Spurs conceded a pair of scores in the opening six minutes to fall 2-1 to Fulham, marking their 10th Premier League home loss of the year.
However the primary topic of discussion was Fulham's next score when Vicario gave away the ball well beyond his box.
The goalkeeper came out to handle a high pass and carried the ball near the touchline.
However, rather than booting it into touch, the Italian turned and attempted to clear away, but lost his footing as the ball skimmed off Wilson and was controlled by Josh King.
King passed the ball off to Welsh midfield player Wilson, who curled a strike into the net from the sideline measured at 36.6 yards.
Moments later when the ball went to Vicario again, a number of Tottenham fans jeered him.
The team were booed off at half-time, with the side 2-0 down, and again at full-time.
A particular of those booing episodes truly angered Frank.
"I heard some of our supporters reportedly booed the incident and jeered after, which, in my view is completely unacceptable," the Dane stated regarding the supporters' response to his goalkeeper.
"[They] can't be real Tottenham supporters that act that way. Fair enough jeering after the game, no problem, but when we are playing, we are supporting one another, we are with one another going forward."
Kenny Tete had handed Fulham a fourth-minute lead before Wilson's goal – with Mohammed Kudus netting for Spurs in an better second period showing.
Ex- Premier League goalkeeper Hart stated that the next goal was "totally avoidable".
"I do understand the supporters' frustration," Hart continued. "I know the part the keeper is playing. He is a great team player, he's a real figure in the locker room but in the end you are going to be assessed by your actions.
"He was heavily implicated in what ended up to be the decisive goal."
'It's Part of Football, I'm a Big Man'
Thomas Frank Stood Up For His Keeper Guglielmo Vicario Following the Game
Italian national team Vicario is in his third campaign with Tottenham.
The 29-year-old said after the match that he had to accept the feedback.
"That goal was a mistake of mine, I take accountability for it," he said.
"The intent was to clear the ball far and I just struck the ball in a poor manner. That made an even bigger challenge to overcome."
He said receiving jeers "is part of the game".
"I am mature, what can I say?" he continued. "The team cannot be affected by the circumstances in the stands. Supporters have the right to do what they think.
"It's on the team to remain increasingly calm, to focus on our own performance. We are missing in composure and poise to reverse outcomes. Today is a bad defeat and it's tough to accept."
'It Shocked Me Nobody Returned to the Goal Line'
Despite the keeper's mistake, it was far from an simple goal for Harry Wilson to score.
Actually it was the next longest-range top division goal of the season – after Tyler Adams' forty-three point three yard goal for the Cherries against Sunderland, which interestingly also occurred on the same day.
Wilson said he was "somewhat surprised" that he still had an empty net to target.
10 moments elapsed between the keeper exiting of his area and the midfielder striking – which was five moments following the kick.
"I felt like the keeper was out of the box for a long time," Wilson said.
"I was surprised none of the back four returned to the goal line. When none of them defended the goal, my eyes sparked somewhat.
"Udogie slipped too, which gave me a bit of extra opportunity. After that it was solely about trying to achieve the correct contact and place it on target. I had a good feeling, the moment it came off my boot, that it was on the right line."
'When You're in a Bad Spell, Everything Seems to Work Against You'
Jeering Whilst We Are Still in Play Is Completely Unacceptable - Frank
While Vicario's mistake led headlines, this was an overall poor performance for Tottenham to extend their home ground woes.
This was their tenth home loss of the year in the league, a shared club record matching nineteen ninety-four and two thousand and three.
The side still have home fixtures against the manager's old side Brentford and champions Liverpool to play prior to the end of the season.
Just a single of those victories have occurred since the manager took over from his predecessor in the summer.
"If you are down 2-0 after six minutes, there is a huge challenge to overcome," stated Frank.
"When you're in a bad spell, everything seems to work against you too – the first was a redirected shot, the second is a mistake from the keeper.
"The outcome leaves us in a position where we have suffered another match. Every game has a single narrative, this game we were defeated in the first six minutes.
"We simply need to continue striving. The later period was much better and hopefully something we can utilize to develop."
Spurs have been defeated in 4 straight at home capital clashes for the first time in the top division.
And they are averaging 9.5 attempts and three point two shots on target per match in the division – their poorest rates on file in a single campaign (since at least the 2003-04 season).
Former Cottagers midfielder Murphy commented that the manager has to ride the storm.
"He's got accept the stick," the pundit remarked. "He's accepted a high profile job at a huge football club with enormous expectation. There is scrutiny and duty that accompanies that.
"The performances at home have been poor and they have to improve {quickly|
